The International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative backed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member states. The day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April every year.
Among the activities of this year’s celebrations in the Gambia include a workshop and a Job fair that helped to provide girls with the opportunity to have “hands on” experience and also interact with different professionals in the ICT sector who can help guide and mentor them to start developing ICT careers from an early stage.

The workshop was held at the Gambia Hotel Training Institute. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure, (MOICI) Mr. Lamin Camara, acknowledged the role that ICT plays towards the development of the country and commended the Internet Service Providers for bringing technology to the door step of every Gambian.
He urged the participants especially the young students to use the social media platforms to discuss productive matters. He noted that security is a major concern and the need to protect ICT users and this has propelled the Government through MOICI to establish a national ICT data centre to monitor and provide protection for ICT users.
